BELTANE
The beginning of summer ~ celebrated on April 30 or May 1
The sacred union of the Goddess and God is observed.
Beltane is a sabbat, and it is believed the the door to the Spirit world is open, and the veil between the worlds are thin enough for spirits to pass through. But unlike Samhain, a festival of the dead, Beltane is a festival for the living.
So how do you celebrate Beltane, most like to have bonfires. This is a very old tradition, it came about mostly for agricultural reasons, fires were necessary to burn off the pastures to make it suitable for planting.
It was believed if there was a frost on Beltane it was a bad omen, but a rainy day predicted good fortune, and a good harvest.
Gathering flowers and greenery are typical customs, also adorning a “may bush” with ribbons. Maypoles are also made, and represent the renewal of life and the return of warmth.
Beltane is also a good time to cast love spells.
